Tributes Pour In for Veteran Journalist Killed in N17 Crash

Tributes are pouring in for veteran journalist Fanie Mthupha, who was among eight people killed in a devastating collision on the N17 near Ermelo in Mpumalanga over the weekend.

Mthupha, a respected news editor at the Boksburg Advertiser and Benoni City Times, died in the crash in the early hours of Sunday, 13 September 2026. Seven other people, including two children, also lost their lives.

Colleagues have described Mthupha as a passionate community journalist, storyteller and mentor who was dedicated to telling the stories of ordinary people.

His death has sent shockwaves through the journalism fraternity, with colleagues remembering him for his professionalism, kindness and commitment to getting the facts right.

Mthupha's contribution to community journalism was also recognised through several awards, including a third-place finish in the digital reporting category at the AVBOB Forum of Community Journalists Excellence Awards.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, while authorities continue to urge motorists to exercise caution on Mpumalanga's roads.
