South Africa has committed to supporting bulk water infrastructure investment across Africa to promote socio-economic development. This pledge was made by Water and Sanitation Deputy Minister David Mahlobo during a panel discussion at the Stockholm World Water Week conference in Sweden.
Mahlobo emphasized the importance of African unity and collaboration in enhancing infrastructure investment to address challenges like climate change, food insecurity, and waterborne diseases. He called on African governments to prioritize infrastructure development and urged stronger partnerships with the private sector.
In South Africa, initiatives such as the Water Partnership Office, established with the Development Bank of Southern Africa, are already facilitating public-private collaborations to fund essential water projects.
The World Water Week conference, held under the theme “Bridging Borders: Water for a Peaceful and Sustainable Future,” continues until August 29, 2024.
